Where does the price of chocolate come from? Children at INTEURO learned finance through play

On 21 June, a children’s meeting on financial literacy took place at the INTEURO InfoPoint. Participants learned what affects the price of chocolate and then created a summer brooch — a colourful beaded dragonfly.

An interesting meeting for children devoted to financial literacy took place at our INTEURO InfoPoint. It was an opportunity to talk about where product prices come from, what affects their value and why the price we see on a shop shelf is not only the cost of the raw material itself.

We are very pleased that the topic and idea for the meeting were proposed by the mother of our participants — Ms Oksana Feshchenko, who prepared and led an engaging lesson on price formation. Using Wedel chocolate as an example, the children analysed what part of the price of a chocolate bar may come from the cost of cocoa, and what part may result from other elements such as production, packaging, transport, people’s work, taxes or retail sales.

The participants joined the discussion with great interest, answered questions and thought together about what else may influence the price of chocolate. The most active participants received a sweet gift — a chocolate bar.

📌 Important

Financial literacy from an early age helps children better understand everyday shopping decisions, the value of work, production costs and responsible attitudes towards money. At INTEURO, we want to discuss such topics in a practical and simple way, close to children’s everyday experience.

After the educational part, it was time for creative work. The children made a summer brooch — a colourful beaded dragonfly. The workshop combined creativity, patience and good fun, while the handmade pieces became a lovely souvenir from the meeting.

We also agreed that we will return to the topic of financial literacy more than once. It is a very broad and important subject worth developing during future activities. At the next meetings, we will be able, for example, to calculate how much it costs to make a bracelet or other items created during our workshops.

We sincerely thank Ms Oksana Feshchenko for the idea, preparation and leading of the session, and all the children for their active participation, curiosity and wonderful atmosphere.
