Polish authorities are implementing additional measures aimed at supporting refugees from Ukraine.
At the end of September 2025, an amendment to the act on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of that country and some other acts was adopted. The new regulations extend legal protection for individuals who have found refuge in Poland due to the war, and also aim to facilitate their daily life and integration into society. These changes are also intended to improve cooperation between public administration, employers, and institutions responsible for supporting these individuals.
The legal stay of Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Poland after 24th February 2022, due to the armed conflict in their country, has been extended—this time until 4th March 2026. The new provisions were published in the Journal of Laws and came into force on September 30, 2025.
According to the new regulations, the stay of Ukrainian citizens and their family members who benefit from temporary protection will be recognized as legal until March 4, 2026. Along with this extension, the validity periods of national visas, temporary residence permits, residence cards, Polish foreigner identity documents, and "tolerated stay permits" are also automatically extended by law. Deadlines for leaving the territory of Poland and for voluntary return are similarly extended to the same date.
These changes represent an important step towards ensuring stability and security for Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland. Extending the legal stay gives these individuals more time to arrange formal matters, find employment, or continue their education, and also supports their further integration into Polish society. At the same time, it facilitates cooperation between government institutions, employers, and non-governmental organizations that support refugees on a daily basis. In the face of the ongoing conflict and evolving situation, such solutions are essential to effectively address the needs of those affected by the war and to ensure them a dignified standard of living.
