What brings us together? Integration sessions at Primary School No. 1 in Kielce
Shared legends, similar customs and family traditions provided a starting point for discussing what brings Polish and Ukrainian people together. During integration sessions at Primary School No. 1 named after Stanisław Staszic in Kielce, students explored their cultural roots and discovered similarities that help them understand one another better.
On 13 and 16 September, Primary School No. 1 named after Stanisław Staszic in Kielce hosted integration meetings with an INTEURO intercultural consultant. The central question was: “What brings us together?” Students explored the shared roots and traditions of Slavic peoples, with a particular focus on Polish and Ukrainian culture.
The discussion ranged from the legend of Lech, Czech and Rus and the Migration Period to the customs we still cherish in our families today. The story of the legendary brothers provided a starting point for exploring the cultural ties between our peoples, while family traditions helped connect the topic to everyday experiences.
Shared traditions, familiar experiences
An important part of the sessions focused on similarities in celebrations, customs and everyday life. Students discovered how much Polish and Ukrainian family traditions have in common. Something familiar from home may also hold meaning for a classmate who grew up in another country.
Meetings like these help students recognise both shared experiences and the diversity of family customs. Discovering similarities can make it easier to start a conversation, while taking an interest in differences encourages openness to other people and their stories.
From exploring culture to building relationships
The meetings at Primary School No. 1 in Kielce combined learning about history and culture with bringing the school community closer together. Conversations about traditions offered an opportunity to understand one another better and strengthen friendships. Exploring what we have in common helps build friendship, mutual respect and dialogue.
Thank you to the students and staff of Primary School No. 1 named after Stanisław Staszic in Kielce for the meetings and your cooperation!
